A BREATHING SPACE IN THE CITY

Between Two Worlds draws inspiration from a reflection shared by a student during a visit to Puzhudhivakkam Lake, capturing the wonder of encountering two seemingly contrasting landscapes existing side by side. The artwork portrays the lake as an oasis of calm amidst the dense urban fabric, where birds, trees and waterscapes coexist with roads, buildings and the rhythms of contemporary city life. Through intimate vignettes surrounding the central waterbody, the work reflects the student's observation that the experience felt both peaceful and fascinating—a meeting of two worlds within the same place. Set against the backdrop of Chennai's expanding concrete landscape, the artwork celebrates urban wetlands as vital breathing spaces that continue to provide ecological refuge, sensory relief and opportunities for human connection with nature, while adapting to the changing needs of modern life. It is a reminder that even within the urban jungle, these living waterscapes offer moments of tranquillity, wonder and coexistence.
